Maureen Gallace paints the rural landscape and modest houses of her native New England. Her intimate, nostalgic landscapes look effortless, but Gallace’s paintings take shape through rigorous observation and decisive editing. Gestural brushstrokes, applied wet-on-wet, render boxlike homes that are nestled in summer foliage and surrounded by pale blue skies. Sometimes Gallace leaves out architectural details such as windows and doors, which leaves the viewer to attach his or her own narratives to the scene. (ART SY)
