Lives and works in New York City

Sean Landers (b. Palmer, Massachusetts, 1962) is unarguably one of the most important artists to emerge from the United States in the 1990′s. His work continues to exert an influence on succeeding generations of artists, somehow remaining vital to each younger generation despite Landers’s consideration of decidedly (older) generation-specific topics such as mid-career and middle-age crises. The vitality of this work consists in a spot-on honesty and humor which is tempered by the artist’s highly self-aware use of artifice; it is this delicate and precarious balance to which artists and a more general audience of any generation continue to relate. In recent years, Landers is particularly interested in the eternal existence of a painting and how an artwork becomes a surrogate for the artist himself and has used various means in order to explore these subjects. The films, sculptures, books and paintings by Landers have been featured in solo museum exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis (2010) and the Kunsthalle Zurich (2004).
