Kounosuke Kawakami
Born 1979 in Yamanashi, Japan
Kounosuke Kawakami’s acrylic and mixed-media paintings explore the intersection between wilderness and the built environment in imaginary landscapes. Kawakami’s environments, which fuse the artist’s painting and drawing with digital imagery and collage, typically feature abandoned structures eroded by nature and devoid of people. Occupying a space between fantasy and reality, Kawakami’s paintings create a post-apocalyptic, utopian vision of the future that combines new technologies with the natural world. He also produces photography and sculpture, such as Survival of Adaptable (2013), a scrim-covered hanging cube that explores the life cycle of water; droplets of water condense on the scrim’s surface until they accumulate enough weight to run down to the plastic sheet beneath, where the process begins again.
